Raider Update Aug. 25

Posted by: jruss | August 25, 2009 | No Comment |
Meet the Coach Night will take place in Cafe’ SMS on Thursday, August 27th at 6:00.  Parents of 7th and 8th Grade athletes will be provided information regarding the athletics program.

Thursday, Sept 3 at 6:00 will be our first PTA Association Meeting and 7th and 8th Grade Meet the Teacher Night.
In an effort to eliminate the amount of paperwork sent home to parents from outside organizations, BISD has implemented a new policy. This policy allows for two school functions a school year, one fall and one spring, where outside organizations can have fliers available to distribute to parents. Fliers will be available on campus and will not be sent home.   Smithfield Middle School has designated Thursday, Sept. 3 as the day this fall that printed materials from outside vendors will be available on campus.  As you attend meet the teacher night, please stop by the table and pick up the fliers of interest to you and your family.  Businesses and organizations who wish to display fliers must turn one in to the school office for approval by Sept. 2nd.  In addition, the district provides outside organizations the opportunity to post their information on the district Web site anytime during the year. These fliers can be viewed at www.birdvilleschools.net. The link is on the left side under, “Community Activities for Students.”

Meet the Teacher Night

Parents,

Thursday night at 6:00 is 6th grade meet the teacher night.  The format will be a little different.  At 6:00 schedules and maps of the school will be passed out in the foyer.  From 6:00 to 6:50 parents and students may move through out the building and meet and greet their teachers.  Please keep in mind that you have seven teachers to meet.  A syllabus and/or class letter will be available in each classroom that will provide specific information about the class.

At 6:50 teachers, parents and students will be called back to the cafeteria.  Teachers and staff members will be introduced.  Students will move to their advisory class with their teacher.  Teachers will provide first day of school information to their students.  I will conduct an information meeting with parents that will end at approximately 7:30.

Sincerely,

Jeff Russell

Your Help is Needed and Appreciated

PTA is providing breakfast to the SMS staff on this Friday, August 21 at 8:00.  If you would like to volunteer a breakfast dish or your time to serve please contact Frances Castillo fec60@sbcglobal.net .

Parents-

All students must register.

TAKS Retest Information

Posted by: jruss | August 13, 2009 | No Comment |

On Friday, August 14th, any incoming 7th and 8th grader who failed the math and/or the reading TAKS assessment in the spring may take a released TAKS test at Smithfield starting at 9:00 a.m. in the cafeteria.  Students who pass this test will not be required to take the math or reading enrichment class in the fall.  This testing opportunity is only for students who failed one of these tests this past spring and who do not wish to take the enrichment class in place of an elective.  Students should bring two pencils with erasers.  If you have any questions, please contact Mr. Sparkman at Byron_Sparkman@birdville.k12.tx.us.

Why do we bring shot records to 7th grade registration????

Due to the new state immunization requirements, all incoming 7th graders must have the following shots before being enrolled:  Tdap, Menactra, Chicken pox.  We will have Immunovax on site on August 11th from 11:00 to 3:00, if you want to bring your child with you to get vaccinated.  The cost is $14 for one shot, $20 for two shots and $25 for three shots. You will need to have a current shot record for them to complete after giving the shot.

****Course selection last spring did not register anyone for school.  It only submitted a student’s preferences for classes.

Medication Pick-up

If your student has medicine stored in the school nurse’s office, it is time to pick it up. All over-the-counter medication will be sent home with the students on Tuesday, May 26th. If you do not want your child transporting his/her medication, please come by the Smithfield Middle nurse’s office to pick it up before then. Narcotics must be picked up by an adult. Any medicine not picked up before the summer break will be discarded. If your student will require more than 10 doses of a medication next year, please have the physician fill out a medication permit during a checkup this summer. If you wish for your child to carry his/her own inhaler next year, please have the physician sign a medication permit in order for this to be allowed.Other important things to remember:
